1. What other profession is similar to being an artist and why?

I think a profession that closely resembles what I do is that of a jazz musician. While I may sometimes begin a painting with an idea or two, the mark making often takes me in completely new and unfamiliar directions. I can imagine that an improvisational jazz artist often experiences some of the same changes. A painting very rarely ends the way I thought it might when I began. My paintings are improvisational by nature. One mark leads to another and…

2. What’s the nicest thing you can remember someone said about your work, or an individual piece?

The nicest thing I have heard is when someone tells me they have not ever seen a painting like mine before. I try to break new ground for myself. When someone recognizes that, I am greatly pleased.

3. What’s one thing you’d like everyone to know about you as an artist?

I would like people to know that I am self-taught as an artist. I have an MFA in theatre. However, I have never taken an art class.
4. What was the last piece of art that you saw that blew you away?

I recently saw Bill Jensen’s show in New York City. I am a great admirer of his paintings. I urge everyone to get to know his large body of work. He’s a real alchemist and a master Brooklyn painter.

5. What’s something you haven’t done but you want to do in art/painting?

I would like to work on a much larger scale of painting. I live and work in a small NYC apartment. It is very difficult to produce larger paintings in my current studio.

6. Which artist do you like better - Ingres or Delacroix, and why?*

I probably like Delacroix a little more due to his exquisite use of color. Delacroix's paintings embodied French Romanticism. To me, viewing ‘Liberty Leading the People’ makes me feel like I am watching a large, sweeping, cinematic film.

*The reason we ask about Delacroix and Ingres is because they were contemporaries with wildly different styles!
