ARNOLD FRIEDMAN

(1879 - 1946) was born in Queens and studied art at the Art Students League in New York City. His mentor was Robert Henri, who was a leading figure in the Ashcan School and was a prominent American realist painter in the late 19th and early 20th century. Friedman is an early American modernist painter, and spent some time in Paris, France, studying impressionism and cubism. He exhibited with some of the most avant garde artists of his time, including a group called the Society of Independent Artists, which included Marcel Duchamp, John Sloan and Man Ray.
