ROBERT KULICKE

(1924-2007) was born in Philadelphia, where he spent his early days as an art student. In 1949, he traveled to Paris to study with Fernand Léger. He primarily painted still lifes throughout his career. Intimate in scale, each painting is contained in a frame that was hand-made by Kulicke, based on designs found throughout framing history. In 1951, he opened Kulicke Frames in New York City and socialized with Abstract Expressionist painters including Robert Motherwell and Franz Kline. A true artist and craftsperson, his frames were commissioned by the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Museum of Modern Art, to frame work by artists such as Giotto and Leonardo da Vinci.
